Hyper-Scaling and Zero-Trust Security Plan

This document discusses how our system can process over 100,000 data packets per second without any lag, and how the entire ecosystem is secured using a 'Zero-Trust' security model.

1. Hyper-Scaling Architecture

To ensure the system remains uninterrupted when telemetry data volumes suddenly spike, we utilize the following scaling mechanisms:

Horizontal Pod Autoscaling (HPA)

HPA is configured within our Kubernetes (K8s) cluster.

  • How it works: When CPU or memory usage exceeds a specific threshold (e.g., 70%), new compute nodes (Pods) are automatically spun up.
  • Benefits: Ensures there is zero lag in data processing during traffic spikes.

Kafka Partitioning

One of the biggest advantages of using Kafka as a message broker is its partitioning capability.

  • How it works: The telemetry_events topic is divided into multiple partitions. Our consumer (Rust/Go) microservices receive data from separate partitions concurrently.
  • Benefits: Increases concurrency and makes it possible to ingest hundreds of thousands of data packets per second.

2. Zero-Trust Security Model

Our security architecture is built on the principle of "Never trust, always verify".

Mutual TLS (mTLS)

  • Where it's used: During communication between all microservices (e.g., Gateway to Kafka, Kafka to Rust Microservice).
  • Why it's needed: Even if a node or pod is compromised, it won't be able to communicate with any other service because it lacks a valid client certificate.

OAuth2 and JWT

  • Where it's used: When sending data from edge devices to the API Gateway.
  • Why it's needed: Every device must prove it is authentic. Tokens must be refreshed periodically.

End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)

  • Where it's used: Sensitive gravitational telemetry data is encrypted at the edge device and is only decrypted once it reaches the compute node.
  • Why it's needed: Even if packet sniffing occurs in transit, malicious actors will only see encrypted garbage data.

Summary

This architecture ensures unlimited scalability while maintaining the highest level of data security.
